South African amateur astronomer John Caister (Jack) Bennett (1914–1990) — just like French comet-
hunter Charles Messier (1730–1817) before him — compiled a list of objects he thought novices using
small telescopes might mistake for comets. The only difference was that Bennett concentrated on the
southern sky.
The objects in Bennett's catalog are southern-sky showpieces. Few of these objects are not on most
observers "must-see" lists. Print out the following list, and check off each object as you observe it. Good
